MS Contin Side Effects, Cautions

MS Contin may aggravate and is contraindicated if the patient has known or suspected:

  • Antibiotic-associated colitis
  • Diarrhea due to poisoning
  • Paralysis of the intestines
  • Slowed breathing
  • Severe asthma
  • Asthma attack.

Adverse MS Contin Side Effects

MS Contin side effects often persist if your dosage is chronic or high. (More severe reactions are listed below in bold:)

  • Anxiety
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Confusion, hallucination
  • Constipation
  • Convulsion, seizures
  • Depressed, changing moods
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Euphoria or dysphoria
  • Exaggerated sense of well-being
  • Extreme nervousness
  • Fainting, palpitations
  • Headache
  • Lack of sexual drive
  • Lightheadedness
  • Light-headedness, fainting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Memory loss
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Restless mood
  • Severe or persistent stomach pain
  • Severe weakness or dizziness
  • Sleeplessness, insomnia
  • Stomach pain
  • Sweating
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Tremors
  • Urinary urgency or retention
  • Vomiting
  • Yellowing of eyes or skin

Seek IMMEDIATE medical care for:

  • Excessive drowsiness
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Hallucinations
  • Pounding in the chest
  • Seizure
  • Severe sweating
  • Shock
  • Slow or shallow breathing
  • Slow or shallow heartbeat
  • Sudden chest pain
  • Swelling of the face or throat.
  • Severe allergic reactions
    • Swelling of the face
    • Swelling of the lips
    • Swelling of the mouth
    • Swelling of the tongue
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Hives, itching
    • Redness
    • Severe rash

Discuss MS Contin use with your health care provider if you have:

  • Abnormal carbon dioxide tension in arteries
  • Addison's disease or other adrenal gland disorders
  • Also taking herbal preparations or dietary supplements
  • Asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Other breathing or lung problems
  • Brain tumor
  • Certain allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • Current or intended pregnancy
  • Currently breast-feeding
  • Curvature of the spine
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Drug abuse or dependence history
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Epilepsy
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Heart, liver, or thyroid disease
  • History of alcohol addiction
  • History of suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Kidney disease
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood volume
  • Mental illness
  • Pressure in the head, recent head injury, or lesions in the head
  • Seizures
  • State of shock
  • Under-active thyroid
  • Urination problems
  • Stomach blockage, inflammatory bowel disease, stomach tract surgery
  • Swallowing difficulty
  • Under current prescription or nonprescription medicine
  • Severe allergic reaction to Morphine or hydromorphone

MAO inhibitors:

  • isocarboxazid (Marplan)
  • phenelzine (Nardil)
  • rasagiline (Azilect)
  • selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam)
  • tranylcypromine (Parnate)

Major tranquilizers

  • Thorazine or Haldol
  • Librium or Xanax

Muscle relaxants

  • Flexeril or Valium

Sedatives

  • Dalmane or Halcion

Water pills

  • Diuril or Lasix

Others:

  • pentazocine (Talwin)
  • nalbuphine (Nubain)
  • butorphanol (Stadol)
  • buprenorphine (Buprenex, Subutex)
  • Alcohol
